Gorō Miyazaki's film scripted by Hayao Miyazaki (2011), set in 1963 Yokohama: every morning Umi hoists signal flags from her hilltop boarding house overlooking the harbour, while fighting alongside Shun to save the school clubhouse. The Yamate bluff, the port and the streets of Motomachi pulse in every background.

Harbor View Park (Minato no Mieru Oka)where Coquelicot Manor would be

It was the first Ghibli film to officially announce its locations, in a tie-up with Yokohama. Umi's boarding house, Coquelicot Manor, is placed in this park on the Yamate bluff, and at the lookout the "U W" signal flags ("I wish you a safe voyage") that Umi raises every morning fly in memory of the release. The Yato-zaka slope behind the park inspired the slopes she walks up and down.

Yamashita Park and the Hikawa Maruthe night walk

Umi and Shun stroll through Yamashita Park at night: behind them are the Queen's Tower, the Hotel New Grand sign and the Marine Tower, which then lit up in colours and served as a lighthouse. The Hikawa Maru moored here appears in the film as itself, in the green livery of the time.

Motomachi StreetShun's croquettes
location
In a side street off the Motomachi shopping street is the Maruei butcher (opened 1950), where Shun buys two croquettes and eats them with Umi, and the shop is still open. Nearby, the Miyazaki florist on the Daikanzaka slope is where the two ride past by bike, and the Takarada tableware shop is advertised on a tram.
